How To

Using Prompter for Zoom and Video Meetings

Last updated:

A teleprompter on a video call solves two problems at the same time: you can read prepared talking points without looking away from the camera, and you can look at the people on the call while looking directly at the lens. This guide walks through how to do both with Elgato Prompter.

Why use Elgato Prompter on a video call?

Two things make Prompter genuinely useful for meetings.

Real eye contact

Most video calls have you looking down at your screen or off to one side. Prompter places your meeting window directly in front of the camera lens, so you're looking at the people on the call and the camera at the same time. For more on why this matters, see our guide on eye contact on video calls.

A second display where it matters most

Prompter doubles as a second monitor. You can read a script, follow talking points, watch the call, or any combination of the three, all without looking away from the camera.

How Elgato Prompter works for video calls

Most teleprompters are built to display scripts and nothing else. They expect a separate camera, a tripod, and a teleprompter app that loads your text.

Elgato Prompter is different. The built-in display behaves like a second monitor connected to your laptop. You can drag any window onto it, including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Webex, or Slack. The camera mounts behind the glass and captures you looking right at whoever's on the call.

How to set up Prompter for a video call

This works the same way across every major video meeting app:

  1. Connect Prompter to your computer with the included USB-C cable
  2. Open Camera Hub and switch Prompter to Display Mode, so it behaves as a second monitor
  3. Open your meeting app (Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Webex, or Slack)
  4. Drag the meeting window onto Prompter's display and make it fullscreen
  5. In your meeting app's camera settings, select your camera (Facecam MK.2, Facecam 4K, or any other compatible webcam mounted behind Prompter)
  6. Start your call. You'll see the people on the call directly behind the lens, and your camera will capture you looking right at them

Once your meeting window is on Prompter, you can keep the layout for future calls. Camera Hub remembers your Display Mode settings.

What to put on Prompter

Prompter is most useful when you match what's on it to what you're doing on the call.

  • Your call window. For meetings where you mostly listen, react, and respond, putting the call window on Prompter is the simplest and most effective setup.
  • A script. For presentations or recorded videos with specific lines, load your script in Camera Hub's Text Mode. You can format text, organize chapters, and control scroll speed.
  • Talking points or notes. For pitches, briefings, or interviews where you want to stay on message but not read word-for-word, put a notes window or document on Prompter alongside the call window or instead of it.
  • A combination. Prompter supports any window from your computer, so you can switch between the call view, your script, and your notes as needed.

Tips for sounding natural

A teleprompter only helps if you don't sound like you're reading from one.

  • Write the way you talk. Use contractions, short sentences, and simple words. If you wouldn't say it out loud, rewrite it.
  • Use talking points, not full scripts. Bullet points keep you on track without locking you into specific sentences. You sound like yourself, not like a press release.
  • Look up occasionally. Even small breaks from the script feel natural to viewers and remind you that you're talking to people, not reciting.
  • Practice your opening. The first 10 seconds set the tone. Knowing your opening cold lets you start with confidence instead of reading.

Hands-free control with Stream Deck

If you have a Stream Deck, the Camera Hub plugin on Elgato Marketplace gives you direct control over Prompter without alt-tabbing during a call. Tap a key to start or stop your script, turn a dial to adjust scroll speed, or switch between display and text modes mid-call. Stream Deck Pedal works with the same actions for completely hands-free control.

Want it all sorted in one setup?

If your main use case is video calls and you'd rather get everything in one purchase, Conferencing Kit + packages Prompter with Facecam MK.2, an adjustable desk mount, and a laptop stand with built-in USB hub. Connect it once and your full meeting setup is ready in seconds.

Better calls start with looking at the camera

Eye contact, on-screen talking points, and a teleprompter that works with the apps you already use. That's what makes the difference between joining a call and showing up to a meeting.

Elgato Prompter is available on its own and works with any video meeting app your team uses.
