GTA RP: How to Stay in Character Without Alt-Tabbing

Staying in character during GTA RP gets a lot easier when the tools around you stop getting in the way. Stream Deck, Voicemod, and Wave Link each handle a different part of that, from emotes and hotkeys to voice changing and background ambience.

Here's how each one works.

The fastest way to break immersion is stopping to type. Digging through an emote menu or trying to remember a command pulls you out of the scene, and putting those actions on Stream Deck keys fixes that.

With a free plugin called FXCommands, you can bind emote commands, /me actions, and even chained sequences directly to Stream Deck keys. Tap a key and your character sits down, waves, pulls out a radio, whatever the server supports. You can set up toggles too, so the same key that starts an emote also cancels it.

Beyond emotes, Stream Deck handles regular hotkeys too. Push-to-talk, inventory shortcuts, radio binds, anything you'd normally reach across the keyboard for can live on a key you can reach without breaking character.

If you want your character to have their own voice, Voicemod makes that pretty simple.

Voicemod is a free voice changer app for Windows and Mac that applies effects to your mic in real time. You select the Voicemod virtual mic as your input in Discord, FiveM, or whatever app you're using, and it picks up the changed voice from there. You can browse hundreds of voices and switch between them while you play.

There are two ways to control Voicemod from Stream Deck, depending on your setup.

The Voicemod plugin on Elgato Marketplace works with the standalone Voicemod app. Assign different voices to keys, switch between them mid-session, and trigger soundboard clips all from Stream Deck. This works with any mic.

If you're already using Wave Link, Voicemod voice changers are also available as VST effects directly inside it, installed from Wave Link's Marketplace tab. Some are free, others are one-time purchases. This route skips the standalone app entirely, since the effect lives on your mic channel in Wave Link. You control it from Stream Deck using the Channel Audio Effect action in the Wave Link plugin.

Background sound does a lot for immersion. A radio crackling, rain hitting a window, crowd noise in a bar. But alt-tabbing to play a clip pulls you right out.

Stream Deck has a built-in Soundboard action that plays audio files from a key. On its own, those clips only play locally through your speakers or headphones. To get them into voice chat so other players actually hear them, you route the audio through Wave Link. Wave Link creates a dedicated channel for Stream Deck's soundboard output, and you toggle that channel into whichever mix feeds your voice chat app. Your sounds and your mic travel together, and you control the volume of each one independently.

One thing worth knowing: Discord's Krisp noise suppression treats soundboard clips as background noise and filters them out. Turn Krisp off if you want your ambience to come through.
