What are lens-filters and how they work with Facecam 4K

Last updated:

Facecam 4K is the first Elgato webcam built to support standard 49mm lens filters. These filters give you real control over your video's appearance, helping reduce glare, soften light, or add a creative touch before the image is captured.

What is a lens filter?

In photography, lens filters attach to the front of a camera and change how light interacts with the lens. Some cut reflections, some adjust color or sharpness, and others add visual effects.

With Facecam 4K, you can use the same 49mm filters that work on traditional cameras. Just screw one onto the lens and you’ll see the difference immediately in your video preview.

Type of Filters

Filter Type

What It Does

CPL (Circular Polarizer)

Cuts glare from glasses and screens. Deepens contrast and reduces surface reflections.

Diffusion

Lighting a bit too harsh? A diffusion filter can soften it just enough to give your video a more polished look, especially around your face.

Star Filter

When bright light hits the lens, this filter creates streaks that radiate outward. It’s often used for creative or seasonal shots with a bit more visual flair.

Macro Filter

Lets the camera focus much closer for tight shots. Good for product demos or dramatic face zooms.

Color Tint

Adds subtle warmth or cool tones. Great for adjusting color balance without software.

How filters attach to Facecam 4K

Facecam 4K has a built-in threaded ring that accepts 49 mm filters. This is a standard filter size used in many photography lenses. Just screw it on gently and you’re ready to go.

The image you see in OBS, Zoom, or Camera Hub will reflect the effect of the filter instantly. There’s no software configuration needed.

You can buy these filters individually, or reuse ones you already own from other cameras as long as they’re 49mm.

How it works in practice

Here’s what to keep in mind when using lens filters with Facecam 4K:

  • Filters apply directly to the image Facecam 4K captures
  • CPL filters must be rotated slightly to adjust glare reduction
  • Macro and heavy diffusion filters may slightly affect focus range
  • You don’t need to enable anything in Camera Hub or OBS
