Elgato Studio 2.0: A New Home for Prompter, Cameras, and Capture

Last updated:

Elgato Studio 2.0 is out now as a free download for Windows and macOS. It brings Prompter, Elgato cameras, and Elgato capture cards into one app.

The biggest changes are for Prompter. The script editor, Voice Sync, and live chat have all been rebuilt, and with Virtual Prompter, you can use them on the laptop or monitor you already own, without any Elgato hardware.

A rebuilt Prompter experience

New script editor

You can write, edit, and organize scripts in Elgato Studio even when Prompter is not connected.

The editor supports full Markdown, including headings, lists, bold, and italics. Paste from Google Docs or Notion, or import Word, OpenDocument, text, or HTML files (plus RTF on Mac), and your formatting comes with it. As you write, the editor shows a word count and an estimated read time.

Scripts are saved as Markdown files on your computer and kept in a searchable library, with folders, favorites, and tabs for working on multiple scripts at once. If you close Studio with unsaved changes, your script reopens just as you left it. If you’re coming from Camera Hub, your existing scripts can be imported as well.

Present your way

Choose from five fonts (Default, Serif, Mono, Arial, and OpenDyslexic), then adjust the size, colors, margins, and spacing until your script is easy to read. You can also dim the lines you’ve already read to keep your place.

On-screen widgets show a session timer and a progress bar, and you can turn them on or off and move them. When you add headings to your script, Studio builds an outline from them, so you can see where you are and jump to any section.

Voice Sync 2.0

Voice Sync scrolls your script as you speak. It waits when you pause, follows along if you skip a line, and finds its place again when you go off-script and come back. You can also set how closely it follows your script.

Voice Sync listens through your microphone, turns what you say into text, and matches it to your script to find your place. On Windows, it runs locally on your PC with a speech model for each language, which you download in Studio the first time you set it up. The models run on your graphics card, so your voice is processed on your PC instead of being sent to the cloud. On macOS, Voice Sync uses Apple’s built-in speech recognition, the same engine behind macOS dictation.

Voice Sync supports English, German, Spanish, French, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), and Portuguese (Portugal) on both Windows and macOS, and it’s free on every platform.

A view for your operator

If you work with a producer or operator, like in a production studio or at a live event, Studio shows them exactly what the presenter sees on Prompter or Virtual Prompter, one to one, on their own monitor. They can guide the script in real time while the presenter stays focused on the camera.

Live chat from Twitch, YouTube, and Kick

Streaming to more than one platform helps you reach more viewers, but keeping up with several chats while you’re live is hard. Connect your Twitch, YouTube, or Kick channel to show live chat on your Prompter, so you can read it without looking away from the camera. If you stream to more than one platform, every message shows up in one combined feed, and you can turn individual channels on or off. Viewer counts, platform badges, and timestamps can be turned on, and chat has its own font, color, and spacing settings.

Virtual Prompter: a teleprompter on any screen

Not every setup has room for a hardware teleprompter in front of the camera, like a small desk, a shared office, or a laptop on the road. Virtual Prompter turns the laptop or monitor you already own into a teleprompter. It uses the same script editor, Voice Sync, and chat as Prompter. You can place your script in one of two ways.

  • Docked: Your script sits in a strip at the top of your screen, just below the camera, so your eyes stay near the lens. Adjust its position to line it up. Docked is free, and you don’t need any Elgato hardware to use it.
  • Floating: Your script moves into a window you can place and resize anywhere on screen, such as beside a video call or a slide deck. It can also go fullscreen on any display.

Floating is part of Virtual Prompter Pro, available on Elgato Marketplace for $2.99 per month, $29.90 per year, or $49.99 for lifetime access (USD). Pro is tied to your Marketplace account, so you can sign in to Studio on any PC or Mac and use Floating there. It needs a Marketplace account and an internet connection.

If you own Prompter XL or Prompter, Floating is included while it’s connected, with no purchase needed.

A new home for cameras

If you set up your Facecam or Cam Link in Camera Hub, you’ll now do it in Elgato Studio. Studio 2.0 replaces Camera Hub, which no longer receives updates, and puts your camera next to your Prompter and capture card in one app. You can also update your camera’s firmware right in Studio, and the controls you know are all here:

  • Exposure: ISO and shutter speed
  • White balance: temperature and tint
  • Pan, tilt, and zoom: with presets for switching angles
  • Dynamic range: HDR for high-contrast lighting
  • Noise reduction: cleans up grainy video in low light
  • Flash Memory: saves your settings on the camera itself

Record right in Studio

With a Facecam or Cam Link, you can now record in Elgato Studio. Choose the resolution, frame rate, and codec, and take audio from any microphone or a Wave Link mix. The new HUD shows your camera settings and a composition grid over the preview, so you can check framing and focus before you record.

When you present with Prompter or Virtual Prompter, you can also show the camera preview behind your script and see how you look while you read.

Capture: plug in and record

Studio 2.0 also replaces 4K Capture Utility. Connect your Elgato capture card and start recording gameplay. Your card’s settings are in Studio too, and Studio installs firmware updates for your card once you confirm.

New in 2.0, you can choose the audio source for each device: your capture card, a system microphone, a virtual audio device, or a Wave Link mix. A Wave Link mix makes it easy to add your own commentary to a recording. Cameras use the same setting, and they record video only until you choose an audio input.

One Stream Deck plugin for all of Studio

With Stream Deck and the Elgato Studio plugin, you can play and pause your script, jump to the next section, switch between script and chat, start or stop a recording, or change camera presets, even while Studio is in the background. The plugin is free on Elgato Marketplace.
