Virtual Prompter: A Free Teleprompter Built into Elgato Studio

Last updated:

Virtual Prompter turns the laptop or monitor you already own into a teleprompter. It puts your script near your camera, so you can read without looking away, whether you’re on a video call, presenting, recording, or streaming.

There are two ways to place your script. Docked puts it in a strip along the top of your screen, just below your camera, and it’s free with no time limits. Floating puts it in a window you can move, resize, or take fullscreen on another display, and it comes with Virtual Prompter Pro.

Write and present your script

Write your script in Elgato Studio, or paste it from Google Docs or Notion. You can also import Markdown, text, Word, OpenDocument, and HTML files (plus RTF on Mac), and your formatting comes along.

When you present, your script can scroll at a set speed or follow your voice with Voice Sync. Voice Sync listens through your microphone and scrolls as you speak. It waits when you pause, follows along if you skip a line, and finds its place again when you go off-script.

If you stream, Chat mode shows your Twitch, YouTube, or Kick chat in the same spot, so you can read it while looking directly at your camera.

For every setting, see the Elgato Studio Software Overview.

Move your script anywhere with Virtual Prompter Pro

If you want your script somewhere other than the top of your screen, Virtual Prompter Pro unlocks Floating. It puts your script in a window you can move and resize anywhere, like right beside a video call. You can also take it fullscreen on a second monitor, or on another teleprompter connected to your computer.

Virtual Prompter Pro costs $2.99 per month, $29.90 per year, or $49.99 for lifetime access (USD) on Elgato Marketplace. It’s tied to your Marketplace account, so it works on any PC or Mac you sign in on. If you own Prompter or Prompter XL, Floating is included while your Prompter is connected.

To sign in, select Account at the bottom of the sidebar and use your Marketplace account. If you take the tour when you add a new Virtual Prompter, you can choose Floating at the Placement step. Otherwise, select the settings icon next to your Virtual Prompter’s name and choose Floating under Placement.

Set up Virtual Prompter

You need Elgato Studio 2.0 or later on Windows 11 (64-bit or ARM64) or macOS 15 Sequoia or later.

1. Download Elgato Studio from Elgato Downloads and open it.

2. In the sidebar, select the three dots next to Elgato devices, then Add Virtual Prompter.

3. Select Take the tour to choose a Placement and the Display your camera sits on. Choose Docked, the free placement. If you skip the tour, you can set both later in your Virtual Prompter’s settings.

4. Use the Horizontal, Vertical, Width, and Height sliders to place your script right below your camera, at a size that’s easy to read.

5. Choose Script or Chat to start. You can switch modes anytime.

Virtual Prompter gives you a teleprompter on the screen you already use. Docked keeps your script right below your camera, with Voice Sync and Chat mode included, and it’s free. If you need your script somewhere else on screen or on another display, Virtual Prompter Pro adds Floating.

Download Elgato Studio and add your first Virtual Prompter to get started.
