With the ChatGPT & Codex plugin, you can control ChatGPT and Codex from Stream Deck keys and dials. Send a prompt, see when a task needs you, or switch models mid-conversation.
It works with both ChatGPT chats and Codex tasks, whether you’re drafting an researching a topic, running a refactor or drafting up an email. The plugin connects to the ChatGPT desktop app, so you can get started right away.
Follow your chats and see which ones are working, waiting on you, or finished. Each Activity key shows a chat based on its position, so a row of them works like a status board, and you can filter to Chat, Codex, or only chats that need attention. When Codex stops to ask for approval, the key changes color, and a tap opens that chat. On Stream Deck +, turn a dial to scroll through chats and press it to open one.
Start a fresh conversation with one tap. Perfect when you move from one project to another and don’t want the old context steering the new one.
Send a prompt you use often to your selected chat. As a developer you could save “Check the remote repo for new open PRs, then triage and summarize what needs my attention.” For emails “Tighten this and keep it under 100 words.” Type the prompt (up to 8,000 characters) and it’s saved to the key.
Speak your prompt instead of typing it. Tap once to start and again to send, or hold the key while you talk and your prompt sends automatically when you let go.
Add direction to a task while it’s working or waiting on you. Save a correction you find yourself typing often, like “Keep changes minimal and don’t touch the tests,” and tap it whenever a task starts to wander.
Stop the selected chat mid-task when you realize something needs to change. Maybe you forgot to mention a file, or the task needs more reasoning effort than you gave it. Stop it, make your adjustments, and send it again.
Run one of the skills installed for a chat’s project, like a formatting pass or a pre-commit check. In an idle chat it starts a new turn, and in a working chat it adds to the current one. On a dial, turn to browse skills and press to run the one shown.
With the Power action, turn the dial to move model and reasoning effort together, from faster to smarter, and tap it to switch between Standard and Fast when the model offers it. To change one setting at a time instead, set the dial to Adjust one setting at a time.
Model, Effort, and Speed also work as individual keys. Set a Model or Effort key to a specific value, or leave it unset and each tap cycles to the next option. Speed switches between Standard and Fast when the model supports it.
See your current usage, remaining limits, and reset times at a glance. If you’re close to a limit, it’s a good moment to switch to a lighter model. Tap the key or press the dial to refresh.
Set the key to open Bottom panel, Review panel, Terminal, Files, or Browser. Tap it again to close Review or Files if either is already open. Bottom panel lets ChatGPT & Codex pick automatically among Terminal, Files, and Browser.
Note: Bottom panel and Review panel work on both Windows and macOS. Terminal, Files, and Browser require macOS.
On Stream Deck Neo, add Activity or Usage to the Infobar to keep task status or usage limits visible while your keys handle prompts and model controls.
Say you start a Codex task to refactor a module, then switch to your browser to review a pull request. Activity shows the task working on your Stream Deck. When Codex stops to ask for approval, the key changes color, so you tap it, approve the request in ChatGPT, and go back to your review. If the task starts drifting, tap your saved Steer prompt. When it finishes, you can check Usage before you start the next one.
On the ChatGPT side, a writer might set up one page with New Chat, Dictate, and a few Send Prompt keys for the edits they ask for most, like shortening a draft or adjusting its tone.
