Wave Go — Broadcast-Quality Wireless Microphone with Clip-On and Handheld Modes

Last updated:

Wave Go is our first wireless microphone. Clip it to your shirt for hands-free recording, or slot it into the Smart Handle to use it as a handheld interview mic. Both modes send audio to one USB-C receiver that plugs into a phone, tablet, or computer, and onboard processing keeps your voice clear and balanced without opening a menu. Wave Go costs $99.99 USD, and an optional second Wave Go mic costs $29.99.

How Wave Go converts between clip-on and handheld

Wave Go works as a clip-on mic or a handheld, from the same transmitter.

In clip-on mode, the 7-gram transmitter attaches magnetically to your clothing, which suits vlogging, presenting, and street interviews.

For handheld use, slot the transmitter into the included Smart Handle and twist the head to lock it in place. The Smart Handle’s button and LED take over from the transmitter’s, and Wave Go switches to its handheld sound profile.

Switching between modes takes a few seconds and requires no extra gear. The Smart Handle, transmitter, receiver, and accessories all fit inside a single carrying case.

EQ Shift

A mic clipped to your chest picks up your voice differently than one held near your mouth. EQ Shift detects whether the transmitter is clipped on or docked in the Smart Handle and applies a matching EQ profile: it restores clarity lost at chest distance in clip-on mode and adds warmth up close in handheld mode. Clip-on audio will still sound slightly less present than handheld, because the mic sits farther from your mouth.

How Wave Go sounds without any setup

Wave Go runs a full chain of onboard processing that works the moment you start recording.

Auto Gain is Wave Go’s automatic gain control (AGC). It adjusts your level in real time, so quiet and loud moments stay closer together. In noisy places like traffic or a busy venue, it can raise the background along with your voice. If you hear that, turn off Auto Gain in the Wave Go app and choose one of six Manual gain levels, starting toward the low end.

Noise cancellation reduces background sound. Press the button on the receiver to turn it on or off, or choose Low, Medium, or High in the Wave Go app. Low keeps the room sounding natural and works for most everyday situations. Medium and High remove more noise in loud places like busy streets or conventions, but High can make your voice sound more processed, so save it for very loud environments.

Two more stages are always on. Dynamic range control catches sudden peaks and smooths them out before they clip, and a low-cut filter removes low-frequency rumble from wind, handling noise, and vibrations.

All of this processing runs on the Wave Go hardware, so it works the same on any phone, tablet, or computer.

Blind test: Shure SM7B and Wave Go

We recorded the same lines, once on a Shure SM7B at a desk and once on Wave Go clipped on. Listen to both to see if you can tell which is which. The answer is just below.

The answer: Mic 1 is the Shure SM7B and Mic 2 is Wave Go, clipped on and running its onboard processing.

Wave Go battery life

The transmitter runs up to 8 hours on a single charge, enough for a full day of recording. Dock it in the Smart Handle and the handle recharges it on the go, for up to 48 hours of total runtime. That covers roughly a week of recording before you need an outlet.

If you’re in a hurry, 10 minutes of charging returns about an hour of use. The carrying case has no battery of its own; connect it to power over USB-C to charge the transmitter and Smart Handle together.

Wave Go controls and LED indicators

The transmitter and Smart Handle each have a single button. Hold it for two seconds to power on or off, press to mute, and double-press to start and stop recording. The receiver has its own button that turns noise cancellation on and off, and status LEDs show when Wave Go is connected, muted, or low on battery.

For every button action and LED color, see the Wave Go User Manual.

Wave Go app

No app is required to use Wave Go. It works out of the box with automatic processing.

For more control, the free Wave Go app for iOS and Android lets you switch between Auto Gain and Manual gain, set noise cancellation levels, mute each mic, check battery levels for the transmitter and Smart Handle, and install firmware updates. The app can control Wave Go even when the receiver is plugged into a computer instead of your phone. If the receiver is plugged into the same device running the app, a real-time level meter shows your input.

The app connects to the receiver over Bluetooth LE for settings and control. Audio travels from the mic to the receiver over a dedicated 2.4 GHz wireless connection, not Bluetooth.

Using Wave Go on a computer with Wave Link

Wave Go doubles as a lightweight mic for calls, podcasts, and recording on a computer. Plug the receiver into a USB-C port on a PC or Mac, and it works like any other microphone.

Add Wave Link to route and mix audio and apply effects, including Elgato Voice Focus, which Wave Go unlocks to separate your voice from room echo and background noise. For the full setup, see How to Use Wave Go with Wave Link.

Recording two people with Wave Go

A second Wave Go Transmitter ($29.99 USD) is available separately and pairs with the same receiver. Both voices are mixed into a single mono track, which suits interviews, co-hosted shows, or any setup where two people record to one phone or computer.

To pair it and balance two voices, see How to Add a Second Mic to Wave Go.

Wave Go colors

Wave Go comes in Black and the Sky Blue edition. The Sky Blue edition is available on the Elgato webstore while supplies last. Only the finish changes, so features, performance, and what’s in the box are the same as Black. On the Sky Blue edition, the Elgato logo on the transmitter, receiver, and Smart Handle is blue, and the carrying case is blue inside and out with a fine gold fleck in the fabric.

Note: The second Wave Go Transmitter comes in Black only.

Wave Go compatibility

Wave Go works with phones, tablets, and computers that have a USB-C port, including iPhones with USB-C, Android devices, and PCs and Macs. It doesn’t support Lightning iPhones or connect directly to mirrorless, DSLR, or cinema cameras.

Frequently asked questions

Does Wave Go work with iPhone?

Yes, if your iPhone has a USB-C port. Lightning iPhones are not supported because Wave Go’s receiver connects over USB-C.

Does Wave Go use Bluetooth?

Audio does not run over Bluetooth. Wave Go uses a dedicated 2.4 GHz wireless link between the transmitter and receiver for low-latency audio. The Wave Go app uses Bluetooth LE to connect to the receiver for settings and firmware updates, but Bluetooth is not involved in the audio path.

How long does the Wave Go battery last?

The transmitter runs up to 8 hours on a single charge. Docked in the Smart Handle, it recharges on the go, for up to 48 hours of total runtime. A 10-minute quick charge returns about an hour of use.

Can I use Wave Go on a computer?

Yes. Plug the USB-C receiver into a PC or Mac, and Wave Go works as a standard USB microphone. For routing and mixing, use it with Wave Link.

Can I record two people at once?

Yes. A second Wave Go Transmitter ($29.99 USD) pairs with the same receiver. Both voices are mixed into one mono track with shared gain and noise cancellation, and each mic has its own mute in the Wave Go app.

Is the Sky Blue edition different from Black?

Only in color. Both have the same features, performance, and box contents. The Sky Blue edition is available on the Elgato webstore while supplies last, and the second Wave Go Transmitter comes in Black only.

Does Wave Go work with DSLR or mirrorless cameras?

No. Wave Go connects via USB-C only. It is designed for phones, tablets, and computers rather than dedicated camera equipment.

Does Wave Go work without an app?

Yes. Wave Go works out of the box with automatic processing (EQ Shift, Auto Gain, noise cancellation, dynamic range control, low-cut filter). The Wave Go app for iOS and Android is optional and lets you set gain and noise cancellation levels and check battery levels.

Does Wave Go record audio onboard?

No. Wave Go sends audio straight to your phone or computer, so there’s no onboard backup recording.

What is the wireless range of Wave Go?

Up to about 30 m (100 ft) between the transmitter and receiver.

Can I charge my phone while recording with Wave Go?

Yes. The receiver has a USB-C charge-through port that delivers up to 5 W, enough to charge your phone or slow battery drain, depending on how hard it’s working.

Is Wave Go water resistant?

No. Wave Go doesn’t have a dust or water resistance rating.
