Step 1: Disable HDCP on Your PS5

Before connecting your PS5 to a capture card, you’ll need to disable HDCP—a copy protection feature that blocks video capture.

⚠️ Important: To disable HDCP, your PS5 must be connected directly to a TV or monitor, not through a capture card.

  1. Connect your PS5 directly to a TV or display via HDMI.
  2. On your PS5, go to Settings > System > HDMI.
  3. Toggle HDCP to Off.

Once HDCP is off, you’re ready to connect to Game Capture 4K S.

Step 2: Connect Your PlayStation 5 to 4K S

  1. Plug an HDMI cable from the HDMI OUT port on your PlayStation 5 to the HDMI IN port on 4K S.

Step 3: Connect 4K S to Your Display

  1. Use a second HDMI cable to connect the HDMI OUT port on 4K S to your gaming monitor or TV.
  2. This gives you lag-free passthrough at up to 4K60 HDR and VRR, so you can play with full fidelity while capturing.

Step 4: Connect to Your Computer

  1. Use the included USB-C to USB-C cable to connect 4K S to your computer or iPad.
  2. No drivers needed, 4K S is plug-and-play on Windows, macOS, and iPadOS.

Step 5: Launch Elgato Studio

  1. Open Elgato Studio, Elgato’s modern recording software.
  2. Your PlayStation 5 video feed will appear automatically, along with real-time HDMI diagnostics.
  3. Check resolution, frame rate, audio status, and more, all in one place.
  4. Hit Record, snap a screenshot, or trim clips on the fly.

Step 6: Stream to OBS Studio

Want to go live? Here’s how to stream your PlayStation 5 gameplay using OBS Studio:

  1. Open OBS Studio.
  2. In the Sources panel, click the + and select Video Capture Device.
  3. Name it (e.g., “PS5 – 4K S”) and click OK.
  4. From the device dropdown, choose Elgato Game Capture 4K S.
  5. Adjust resolution, frame rate, or crop settings as needed.
  6. Add overlays, your mic, alerts, then hit Start Streaming.

With 4K S’s ultra-low latency, HDR10, and VRR passthrough, your PS5 gameplay will look and feel just as good on stream as it does in your hands.

PlayStation 5 – Capturing Game & Chat Audio with 4K S

On PlayStation 5, capturing audio works out of the box through HDMI. But things change once you connect an analog headset to your controller, especially when using party chat. PS5 will reroute all audio (game and voice) to your controller, meaning your capture card will no longer receive sound.

There are two main ways around this. The simplest is to plug your headset into your computer and monitor game audio via Elgato Studio or OBS Studio preview. This keeps everything in sync and preserves full-quality HDMI audio in your recording. For full party chat capture—including your own mic—we recommend using Elgato Chat Link Pro, an audio adapter designed specifically to solve this PS5 issue. Learn more about Chat Link Pro here.
