If you’ve shopped for a microphone, you’ve probably seen words like “cardioid” or “omnidirectional” listed in the specs. That’s the polar pattern, and it’s one of the most important things to understand before you buy, more useful to know than sample rate or frequency response for most beginners.
A polar pattern describes the shape of the area around a microphone where it picks up sound clearly. Some mics focus tightly on whatever is right in front of them. Others pick up sound from all around. Picking the wrong one is a common reason new setups sound off: too much room echo, a co-host who sounds distant, or background noise that won’t go away no matter how you adjust settings.
A microphone’s job sounds simple: capture sound. But every room has more than one sound source. There’s your voice, but also your keyboard, your fan, an AC unit, a roommate’s TV in the next room, or a co-host across the desk.
If a microphone picked up everything in the room equally, none of it would sound clean. Engineers solve this with capsule design that makes a microphone more sensitive in some directions than others. That directional sensitivity is the polar pattern. It’s called “polar” because it’s typically drawn as a circular graph, showing how sensitive the mic is at every angle around it.
Understanding this upfront helps you avoid a mismatch between what you’re using the mic for and what it was actually designed to hear.
Cardioid is the default pattern for most microphones built for solo voice work: streaming, gaming commentary, podcasting, and remote calls.
A cardioid pattern picks up sound clearly from the front, rejects most sound from directly behind, and picks up a moderate amount from the sides. The name comes from the heart-shaped pattern it forms on a polar graph.
This works well because most people record from a fixed position, speaking into the mic from roughly the same angle each time. Cardioid patterns cut down on room noise and background sound without requiring you to treat your room acoustically.
Wave DX and Wave:3 MK.2 are both good examples: each uses a fixed cardioid pattern, built to isolate a single voice while rejecting keyboard clatter and background noise.
Best for: solo streaming, gaming, podcasting from one seat, voice chat, remote meetings.
These are narrower versions of cardioid, and they’re not identical to each other. Supercardioid narrows the front pickup area further than cardioid, with a small rear lobe that lets in a bit of sound from directly behind. Hypercardioid goes further still: it’s the most directional of the three, with an even tighter front pattern and a slightly larger rear lobe than supercardioid. In both cases, rejection is strongest at the rear sides rather than directly behind the mic.
You’ll see these on mics built for noisier environments, like a desk near a loud PC or a room with poor sound treatment.
An omnidirectional pattern picks up sound at roughly the same level from every direction. There’s no “sweet spot” to speak into. It hears the whole room.
This sounds like a downside for solo use, and often is, but it’s the right choice for certain situations: recording a group sitting around a table, capturing ambient room sound intentionally, or a panel where several people are talking and moving around.
Best for: group recordings, roundtable discussions, panel interviews, capturing natural room ambience.
A bidirectional pattern, often called figure-8, picks up sound clearly from the front and back, while rejecting sound from the sides.
This is a specialized pattern, most useful for two people facing each other across a mic, like a face-to-face interview. It’s less common on mics built for streaming or gaming, but you’ll see it on multi-pattern condenser mics aimed at podcasters and voice-over work.
Best for: face-to-face interviews, two-person podcast setups sharing one mic.
Unlike cardioid, omnidirectional, or figure-8, stereo isn’t a single polar pattern. It’s a recording technique that combines two capsules, often a pair of cardioids or omnis, angled or spaced apart to capture sound with a sense of left-right space rather than a single point source.
This isn’t about rejecting background noise. It’s about capturing width and ambience, which is why you’ll find it on mics aimed at music recording, ASMR, or field recording, rather than voice-focused setups.
Best for: music, ambient sound recording, ASMR content.
Instead of memorizing every pattern, work backward from how you actually plan to use the mic.
Important: switching patterns only helps if your microphone actually supports more than one. Many budget and gaming-focused mics ship with a single, fixed cardioid capsule. If you expect to switch between solo streaming and group recording, check whether a mic offers multiple patterns before buying, rather than assuming you can adjust later.
It’s easy to mix up polar pattern with microphone type (dynamic vs. condenser), but they’re separate specs. Polar pattern describes directional pickup. Mic type describes how the capsule converts sound into an electrical signal, which affects sensitivity and how much detail it captures. A mic’s listing typically states both separately, and you’ll want to check each one on its own terms rather than assuming they’re linked.
That said, the two aren’t entirely unrelated in practice. Mics that let you switch between multiple polar patterns are almost always condensers, since that switching relies on multiple internal diaphragms. Dynamic mics are effectively fixed to a single pattern, usually cardioid.
Once you know your mic’s pattern, a few habits make a bigger difference than any setting:
Choosing the right polar pattern before you buy saves you from fighting your setup after the fact. Match the pattern to how you actually record, and the rest of your audio setup gets a lot easier to dial in.
