Choosing your first microphone comes down to one decision before anything else: USB or XLR. The connection type determines how you set up, what extra gear you need, and how your setup can grow over time.
This article explains how each type works, what each does well, and what you need for an XLR setup, so you can pick the right starting point for streaming, podcasting, meetings, or recording.

A USB microphone packs everything into one device: the capsule that picks up your voice, a preamp that boosts the signal, and a converter that turns it into digital audio your computer understands.
That is why setup is so simple. Plug the mic into a USB port, select it as your input, and you are ready to talk. There are no drivers to hunt down and no extra boxes on your desk.
USB mics have also come a long way in sound quality. Wave:3 MK.2, for example, processes your voice on the mic itself using Wave FX, applying effects like EQ and compression before the signal even reaches your computer.
An XLR microphone outputs an analog signal through a three-pin XLR cable. It has no converter of its own, so it needs an audio interface: a separate device that amplifies the signal and converts it to digital audio for your computer.
XLR has been the standard in studios and broadcast for decades. The connection is balanced, which helps reject interference even over long cable runs, and it works with virtually every professional microphone made in the last half century.
The tradeoff is that an XLR mic never works alone. The interface is a required part of the chain, and it plays a big role in how your setup sounds and what it can do.

An XLR setup has three required parts, plus one thing to check.
1. An XLR microphone
XLR mics come in three main types: dynamic, condenser, and ribbon. Dynamic mics are less sensitive and forgiving in untreated rooms. Condensers pick up more detail but also more of your room. Ribbon mics deliver a smooth, natural sound prized in studios, but they are delicate and need plenty of clean gain, which makes them less common for everyday streaming or podcast setups.
2. An audio interface
The interface is the bridge between your mic and your computer. It provides gain, converts the signal to digital, and usually adds monitoring through a headphone output.For a single mic, Wave XLR MK.2 handles gain, conversion, and onboard effects in one compact device. 3. An XLR cable
A standard three-pin XLR cable connects the mic to the interface. Any well-made cable works; length depends on your desk layout.
4. Phantom power (condenser mics only)
Condenser microphones need 48V phantom power to operate, which your audio interface supplies through the XLR cable. Dynamic and ribbon microphones do not need it, and many passive ribbon mics can be damaged by it, so keep phantom power off unless your mic calls for it. There is no wrong answer, only a wrong fit. An XLR rig you never finish setting up will not sound better than a USB mic you actually use every day, and if you have outgrown what USB offers, no amount of simplicity makes up for the inputs you are missing.
