Turbo.264 version 1.1

iPhone Preset

Turbo.264 1.1 contains a new iPhone preset. For high definition video with a 16:9 aspect ratio, the encoded  file's resolution is 480x270; for standard definition 4:3 content, the resolution is 480x360. As with the Apple TV and iPod presets, exported videos will automatically be placed into the iTunes library for later syncing to the iPhone.

Custom Settings

Turbo.264 1.1 contains a new custom settings dialog. To access it, add a source movie to the Turbo.264 application, and click the Format popup menu. In the new sheet that appears after selecting the Edit… menu item, you can customize the video and audio settings used for each profile. A new preset is created as soon as you choose a non-automatic setting:

Enhanced Widescreen format detection

Turbo.264 1.1 detects widescreen DVD (VIDEO_TS) content automatically and encodes it without black bars. A widescren checkbox appears in this case. Should the automatic detection fail, or to preview the effective aspect ratio that will be used, toggle the Widescreen checkbox.

Audio track selection

For MPEG sources with multiple audio tracks, you can now pick which track gets encoded through a popup menu in the information sheet for the source. To access this sheet, click the “i” button at the top right corner for each source.

Picture Quality Improvements

Turbo.264 1.1 contains numerous enhancements to the picture quality of encoded video from MPEG files, interlaced source materials, as well as video that needs to be scaled down.

Integration

Turbo.264 installs a QuickTime™ component to enable accelerated exports from any application. In addition, the Turbo.264 application can be controlled via AppleScript.

Elgato is also interested in hearing from 3rd party developers who would like to add support for Turbo.264 to their application. Send your proposal to turbointegration@elgato.com to get started.

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Support

Turbo.264 1.2 is compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.

Transport Stream Support

Turbo.264 now supports transcoding entire transport streams, e.g. from set top boxes. Drag the transport stream file onto Turbo.264's main window. Each available video program is added as a separate item. Click Start to encode all video programs at once, or remove individual programs by clicking the item's (X) button.

Tip: If you'd like to change the encoding format for all video programs, hold down the Option key while choosing the encoding format from the popup menu.

Some video programs may contain multiple audio tracks, e.g. additional language or audio commentary tracks. For each item, you can pick the audio track which will be encoded.  To select the audio track for a video program, click the “i” button at the top right corner, and pick the audio track from the popup menu.

Drag and Drop EyeTV Recordings
Drag any EyeTV recording directly from the EyeTV Programs window or from the Finder onto Turbo.264's main window. You can then select the desired Turbo.264 export format preset, including custom presets.

YouTube Upload
Turbo.264 1.3 makes it even easier to upload your videos to YouTube, with good quality and short upload times. Drag your source clip to Turbo.264’s main window, and select YouTube from the encoding format popup menu:

In the next window, click Add… to add your YouTube account information:

Enter your YouTube user name and password:

Finally,  add Category, Title, Description, and Tag information to the clip you want to encode. Don’t forget to specify your privacy settings. Click OK to return to Turbo.264’s main window.

Click Start to encode. Once your clip has finished encoding, it is immediately uploaded to YouTube:

After the upload finishes, your browser opens to the My Account/Videos section of YouTube:

At present, the YouTube web site takes some processing time to additionally encode your clip into Flash (FLV) format. Once your video is live and ready to share, the YouTube web page is updated with the link to your clip.

DVD Chapter Markers

For unencrypted DVD sources, drag the VIDEO_TS folder to Turbo.264’s main window and encode to iPod, iPhone or Apple TV format. With version 1.3, each DVD chapter will correspond to a QuickTime chapter in the resulting file. This makes it much simpler to skip through an entire movie.

Dolby Digital™ AC-3 Audio Passthrough for Apple TV Exports

When exporting to Apple TV format, for sources that contain Dolby Digital™ AC-3 audio, the digital audio will be passed through into the resulting file. Enjoy the multichannel audio experience on your surround sound system connected to Apple TV. The sound quality is identical to the digital original source.

QuickTime Broadcaster Support

Turbo.264 1.3 adds support for compressing live streaming video into H.264 using QuickTime Broadcaster. The CPU load is much less than when using software compression, and the quality is always 100%, no frames are dropped.

Streaming is supported at 320x240 and 640x480 resolutions. To set up QuickTime Broadcaster for 320x240 streaming, start with the built-in “DSL/Cable” preset, then change the Compressor to “H.264 (Elgato Turbo.264)”. For 640x480, start with the built-in “LAN” preset.

In the example below, the usage case is to stream live video from an iSight camera at 640x480 resolution over the LAN to Leopard QuickTime Streaming Server. Consult the “QuickTime Streaming and Broadcasting Administration” guide at Apple’s Mac OS X Server Resources web page for more information on QuickTime Broadcaster and QuickTime Streaming Server.
